Description
PixelHaze Academy founder Elwyn Davies has been a professional web and graphic designer since 2004. In fact, he has been working with graphic design software, including Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, since way back in the mid-1990s.
Over the past 4-5 years, he has been working with Canva, and, although it doesnβt have the technical capability of the industry-leading software, it is the perfect gateway to desktop publishing for the next generation of designers or for those of you who need to create the occasional flyer, social media graphic or slideshow presentation.
Canva is extremely easy to pick up, it has a huge number of starting templates, with a stock library baked-in to the website. Whatβs more, it is built into your browser. You no longer need to download, install and update design software on your computer to create stunning artwork. Over and above that, the majority of features are completely free.
Throughout this masterclass series, we will be working with all aspects of Canva, carefully striking the balance between a technical understanding of what the software is capable of, to working with assets and the built-in font library. To compliment all of this, we will be tapping into Elwyn’s experience as a professional designer to ensure you have a number of take-away tips and processes that he has picked up through the years.
We hope this has managed to whet your appetite and you are now ready to crack on with Canva. Letβs get started…

The Lowdown: Beyond the Drag-and-Drop Hype
Letβs be honest: most people think they “know” Canva because theyβve slapped a pre-made template onto an Instagram post and called it a day. But as someone who has spent years in the tech ecosystem, Iβve seen far too many “designed” assets that look like a generic stock-photo nightmare. Thatβs where Elwyn Davies steps in with his “Canva Box of Tricks.” This isnβt your typical beginner to advanced tutorial that walks you through where the buttons are. We all know where the buttons are. What Elwyn delivers is a masterclass in creative problem-solving and design systems that actually scale.
The core philosophy here is moving away from the “template-first” mindset. Instead, Elwyn treats Canva as a legitimate industry-standard tool, pushing the boundaries of what the browser-based software can actually do. The course feels less like a lecture and more like a series of hands-on labs where youβre dissecting the “why” behind the “how.” Whether you’re trying to build a cohesive brand identity or a complex presentation, the focus is on achieving a high-end, professional finish that doesn’t scream “I made this in ten minutes.” Itβs about the bridge between amateur enthusiasm and job-ready skills.
What You Need Before You Start
The beauty of this curriculum is the low barrier to entry, but donβt mistake “easy to access” for “easy to master.” To get the most out of these real-world projects, you should have:
- A Canva Account: While a free account works, a Canva Pro subscription is highly recommended to unlock the full potential of the brand kits and magic resize features Elwyn discusses.
- A Basic Eye for Aesthetics: You don’t need a degree, but an interest in visual communication will help you appreciate the nuances of the typography and spacing lessons.
- A Growth Mindset: Be prepared to unlearn some “bad” habits youβve picked up from using generic templates.
The Toolbox: Mastery Over Mechanics
Elwyn doesnβt just show you tools; he shows you a workflow. The course dives deep into graphic design principles that are often skipped in tech-focused training. Youβll find yourself working through certification prep style modules that cover:
- The Architecture of Layouts: Using grids and frames to ensure your designs have “breathing room”βthe difference between a cluttered mess and a premium look.
- Advanced Typography: Mastering hierarchy and font pairing so your message actually gets read.
- Dynamic Color Theory: Going beyond simple palettes to understand how working with color charts can evoke specific psychological responses in your target audience.
- Workflow Automation: Using Canvaβs internal shortcuts and “tricks” to cut your production time in halfβcrucial for career growth in fast-paced marketing roles.
Career Trajectory and Market Value
In todayβs market, being “design-literate” is a massive multiplier for your career growth. We are seeing a shift where job roles like Social Media Managers, Content Strategists, and even Product Managers are expected to produce high-fidelity visual assets without waiting a week for the design department to get back to them. By mastering these job-ready skills, you position yourself as a “T-shaped” professional. Youβre not just a writer or a coder; youβre someone who can package ideas into real-world projects that convert. This course is effectively a shortcut to becoming a one-person creative agency, making you an indispensable asset in any startup or corporate environment.
The High Notes (Pros)
- Efficiency-Focused: Elwyn is obsessed with speed. He teaches you how to stop clicking around and start using shortcuts that make you look like a wizard.
- Design Fundamentals First: Unlike other courses that focus on “cool effects,” this one grounds everything in graphic design principles, meaning your work will actually look professional, not just “decorated.”
- Engaging Delivery: Elwynβs style is conversational and authoritative. It feels like getting a 1-on-1 mentorship session from a seasoned pro who has been in the trenches.
- Actionable Outcomes: By the end of the hands-on labs, you aren’t just left with a certificate; you have a portfolio of work that demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of visual communication.
The Reality Check (Cons)
If I have to be honest, the biggest hurdle isn’t the courseβitβs the platformβs limitations. While Elwyn pushes Canva to its absolute limit, it is still not a replacement for high-end vector software like Adobe Illustrator for complex logo creation or heavy-duty print production. If youβre looking to become a hardcore technical illustrator, you might find the “Canva-ness” of the tool frustrating once you see what professional design theory really looks like. However, for 95% of digital business needs, this “Box of Tricks” is more than enough to dominate the field.
